Baking soda is a versatile and cost-effective ingredient that has been used for years for it’s exceptional cleaning properties. What is it?

The mixture creates an “eruption” of bubbles making it a popular experiment for kids.  It is also what makes cake rise when used for baking.  In 1846, the Arm and Hammer Company¹ began commercially distributing the product. Over time, the product gained popularity for its many uses.

What make it a safe cleaner?

Firstly, it is non-toxic and does not contain harmful chemicals that can harm your health or the environment. Unlike conventional cleaning products that contain harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach, ammonia, and phosphates, baking soda is a natural and gentle cleaner that does not pose any health risks.

Secondly, it is hypoallergenic and does not contain any fragrances or dyes that can trigger allergies or irritate sensitive skin. This makes it an ideal cleaner for people with allergies or sensitivities to conventional cleaning products.

Thirdly, it is safe for use around children and pets. Unlike conventional cleaners that can be dangerous if ingested or inhaled, its non-toxic and will not harm your furry friends or little ones if accidentally ingested. Even the  EWG (Environmental Working Group)² rates this substance as an A+ for being a safe product to use.

It is non-toxic, biodegradable, and safe for use around children and pets.

How does it work as a cleaner?

Baking soda is an effective cleaner because it has natural abrasive and deodorizing properties. When mixed with water, it forms a paste that can be used to scrub away dirt, stains, and grime from surfaces. Its gentle abrasive action helps to remove dirt and grime without scratching surfaces, making it a safe cleaner for delicate surfaces such as glass, ceramic, and stainless steel.

Not only is it a great surface cleaner, it also has antibacterial³ and antifungal properties. 

In addition, baking soda is also a natural deodorizer. It can absorb and neutralize odors from carpets, upholstery, and other surfaces, leaving your home smelling fresh and clean. It’s particularly effective at removing odors from refrigerators and freezers, where it can absorb and neutralize food smells.

Did you know that in 1986, the Statue of Liberty’s 100 year anniversary, 100 tons of Arm & Hammer’s baking soda was used to clean her?  It was able to gently remove coal tar that was built up for nearly a century without any damage!


How can it be used for cleaning?

There are a variety of ways you can use baking soda for cleaning. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. All-purpose cleaner: Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 quart of warm water in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as a general cleaner for countertops, sinks, and other surfaces.
  2. Toilet cleaner: Sprinkle baking soda into your toilet bowl, let sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

  3. Carpet deodorizer: Sprinkle baking soda over carpets and upholstery, let sit for 15-20 minutes, then vacuum up the powder. This will help to absorb and neutralize odors from pets, smoke, and other sources.
  4. Oven cleaner: Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste, and apply the paste to the inside of your oven. Let sit for several hours, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  5. Silver cleaner: Mix baking soda with water to form a paste, and use the paste to gently clean silverware and other silver items. Rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth.
